Grant What mapping land app do you use? Another great video
is your blend effective on mesquite?
I lot of folks use a mixture of triclopyr (Remedy) and clopyralid (Reclaim) to terminate mesquite. Some use a newer product called Sendero. Read the labels!
Do you have a video discussing safety of timber cutting versus safety of leaving dead standing timber? Do you self-limit the size of trees you cut down or terminate and leaving standing?
i remember a video he talks about cutting down a living tree that’s super heavy and when it comes down it’s destructive to the good trees and dangerous. once it’s dead the small branches fall first, then the larger ones and eventually the rest of the tree in years to come but everything weighs almost nothing.
@@dylanhalseth1755 Thanks for the reply. I'm not a big fan of dead standing timber, but I can see it being relatively safer.
I don't have a video on that subject. Felling trees is certainly more dangerous than leaving then standing. I don't use a limit of size for trees to leave standing. Most woodlots have a few large dead trees standing from lightning strikes, disease, etc.
What chemical do you use
For most hardwoods I use the Harper blend of 50% Garlon 3A, 40% water, and 10% Arsenal AC. The generics of these work fine and I purchase online to find the best price.
@@GrowingDeerTV Awesome Thanks
I’ve got thousands of gum trees in my thinned rows of loblolly pines and don’t have the best equipment to manage them
The least expensive and best way to terminate gums in a pine stand is by spraying it with a chopper or drone. This often costs about $115 per acre or so, pending on the total acres to be treated, etc.
Another great video, Grant! Keep hammering on forest stand improvement. You know, and I know, the deer and the turkey population will approve.
Great video with lots of information
Why not Garlon 4?
I think Garlon 4 is what they use in basal spraying applications. Someone might need to correct me here
Garlon 3A is water soluble and mixes better.
Turning the woods into a savanna I understand during the growing season. But what about during late fall/winter dormancy when the 0-4' is deposited or laid over by snow? Is there enough cover to offer security?
Doug - that depends on the species present. In addition, not all of the property has to be a savanna.
Can you recommend a foliar spray mix to terminate sweet gum saplings? I’ve read that Garlon will do it, but worry about residual in the soil.
If the gums are in a hardwood stand, I don't know of a herbicide that will control them and not harm other hardwoods. If in pine stand, the most common herbicide used is Arsenal - which won't harm pines.
@@GrowingDeerTV Thank you!
What kind of squirt bottles do you get? Tried 2 different kinds both leaked
We got these a stuffmart (big box stores). I simply purchase and test.
Prescribed fire was not legal in Pennsylvanian and it isn't in NY state!?!?! WTF! There is something wrong with those people. This explains why states like NJ are so backward, with the NJ Sierra Club opposing Prescribed fire, and calling having a forest management plan "logging". What a bunch of elitist urban Fs.
Can we get a bit more explanation to the layman’s terms of this. Seems interesting
Sorry - I tired to explain it in easy terms. We have other videos on this subject.
Seems like the problem started when man thought he had a better plan than the MASTERS plan!!!
Always - from Even on.
Preach!
Another testimony on predator management, forest disturbance, and fire. Our turkeys are coming back! Jump on board everyone!
So if i do all this what is the percentage of deer and turkey go up by?
Danny - there are way too many variables for me to guess including the acreage, current populations, etc.
You'll see an increase in activity of approximately 29.963 percent! 😉
@@showmetheheartland funny lol
Bingo !
Great info
A variety of Habitat management techniques is key for all wildlife.
@GrowingDeerTV Very informative. I recently planted Sun hemp, millet, peas & alfalfa. When would be the best time to terminate? Do you have some recommendations for crimpers?
All of those except the alfalfa are annuals and likely should be terminated in time for the fall crop to do well! I use a PH crimper and it works great!
why did u shoot? so sad killing just to be killing
I’ve followed your advice about shooting when a deer has its head up since I first saw your video 5.5 years ago. The day after I saw it 2 does walked in front of me feeding at 22 yards. I waited until the lead doe put her head up & shot. I didn’t have it on video but I swear she started to drop just before my arrow got there, but she couldn’t drop fast enough. Now I just returned from my 1st trip to S Africa and took 6 animals in 7.5 days of bow hunting. We got 4 of the 6 on video and while most didn’t move before my arrow arrived, that wasn’t the case on the Impala ram I shot. At 18 yards I killed it with a perfect pass through shot that was just a little higher than it should have been. To my surprise when I got home and had time to look closely at the video, going frame by frame, it was clear to me that the ram dropped 1 to 2 inches before my 18 yard shot got to him. Even with his head up! Had I not waited for him to raise his head, I’m not sure I would have taken him. Thank you Dr. Woods! C Sanders
Congratulations on what sounds like a very fun hunt!
Grant, a video or short of yours popped up a week or so ago that showed you girdling and squirting some trees. It looked like you had some sort of foaming agent in the mixture, which I assume helps hold the herbicide in place. What was that? Thanks
Adan - We don't use a foaming agent - just a mix of herbicides and blue dye.
So my question is witch one do you like better 350 legend or the 400
Both work great! I really like the 350 and have settled on it.
I put a crunch-proof swivel in the middle of the chain on my D.P.'s Coons can tear up things that you wouldn't think that they can. I usually either use an old truck brake rotor or a 20" earth anchor if there's not a fair sized tree to tie off to Good Luck
That was a hole. Full body drainage in 5 sec. That was on par with a doe I shot with a 44 mag with hollow points. Entry hole, thumb size, exit hole, just about fist size. I will be thinking hard about those G5’s. Thanks for the visual reference.
What basal area do you recommend to improve hardwood stand for wildlife? My property varies from 120 to 80 and I'm going to have it logged to 50. Is this too much? My wife is freaking out.
Pending on the situation and objectives, I like 30 to 50% of the sun's energy reaching the forest floor. A basal area of 50 will meet that objective. It's very important with hardwoods to have a plan for after the timber harvest because there will most likely be a lot of stump sprouts and seedlings!
Great info, as always 👍👍
Terrific video sir! Thank you.
What basal foot value is this pine stand?
Clark - After most logging jobs the resulting basal area varies. This one has spots from about 30 to 60 basal feet per acre.
Grant What the aproximate basal foot value is this pine stand?
40 to 60 feet - pending on the area.
How do u do it with out those
I don't understand the question - sorry!
@@GrowingDeerTV sorry , how do you stake a dog proof with no cable ? Just use a T stake ?
Do you always spray after you thin pines? Can you skip spraying and just do the prescribed fire?
If hardwood saplings are an issue, it's rare that fire will terminate them.
This is yet another awesome update. What I like is the fact that more deer and turkey are showing up. I'm working on 125 acres of hardwood biological desert myself. How long does hack and squirt take to see the tree start to die? Thanks again, Growing Deer TV TEAM!
Thanks Ryan! How long until trees show signs of the treatment depends on the tree species, tree size, time of year, herbicide used, etc. I've seen it take as little as 3 weeks to as long as the following growing season.
@@GrowingDeerTV Perfect, thank you!
Thank you for the masterclass sir.
Other than having a monoculture or the Japanese variety why take out beautyberry? Great native plant for deer and birds
I agree! In this case there was a bunch of beautyberry.
What kind of seed are you planting and how can I buy it
Seems like thinning trees to get light to the ground is possibly the most important step to improve habitat.
Paired with fire and or herbicide, it is a powerful tool and a great partner to quality food plots!
Big $$$ Ssw Timber!
Outstanding results 👍👍👍
Stay after that that Serecia lesedeza. It really spreads fast, and it actually seems to like being burned!
You are correct - fire and mowing doesn't control Sericea.
No one eats ground hog , this isn’t hunting it’s just bloodlust
I eat groundhog! You should try it.
Your comment is filled with bloodlust
Have you ever had a tractor or equipment tire go into an entrance hole for a ground hog burrow? You'll think the tractor is going to roll over on you going across a hillside. Have you ever broken equipment because of that or go to pull into your equipment building and the concrete floor snaps from one digging underneath it? One of my favorite things is when they chew the insulation off wires on vehicles and equipment you gave on the farm. Go through that just once and you might understand why a groundhog is considered a pest.
Dude grounds hogs are very much a pest and they can cause thousands of dollars of damage to farm equipment and the holes they dig can cause farm animals such as cows and horses to break a leg if they step in the hole if a horse or a cow steps in a ground hog hole thats money out that person's pocket if it's a horse it's thousands and thousands of dollars for a vet bill and often the animal is put down so there goes either a beloved pet or working animal for.that person or farm if it's a cow depending on if it's a bull or cow female then that's money they lose again because you don't try to fix a cows broken leg so ground hogs are a serious pest and nuisance so before you run your mouth learn your facts
I have been interested on how these taste. We have a million in maine
They are herbivores and taste good!
They taste very good I'm from Virginia and we have a million of them
But why? Will you be eating that animal?
We do eat groundhog and they can do a lot of damage.
Because all animals hunt !!!!!
Why
to eat
I love it but how many people can buy one of these no till drills?
Actually many brands are in short supply!
Insted of weighing seed, I take a measuring cup (fl.oz.) and pour the new bag slowly into the cup a little ar a time. I transfer it to the tote, noting how many total fluid ounces are in the bag. It is now possible to convert the total bag size (acre, 1/4 acre etc.) Into total fluid ounces and use that conversion to scoop into the bag when the plot size has been determined. I also convert my small plot sizes into qubic yards vs acres to eliminate using fractions as much.
What is that rope
Some folks use rope to make mock scrapes.
